Crop

When I first saw this layout in a magazine, the cropping of the photos caught my eye.  I love trying new and different ways to crop.  Sometimes it’s out of necessity (I captured something in the background I don’t like….for instance, a garbage can or the dog’s rear end) and sometimes I just like to bring the subject in really close.  Digital photos make cropping a snap.  You can make photos any size and shape you want to and if you don’t like your crop, change it! You don’t have to print until you have a crop you like.  Most photos look completely different when cropped.  Play around….you might be surprised what you come up with.

I also like how the title was worked into this layout. It kind of takes the place of one of the photos. You could also use four photos in this layout by replacing the strip of patterned paper.   Remember to look beyond the theme and colors of a layout when looking for ideas.  Instead, try to visualize the layout as a sketch. I usually search for layouts based on the number of photos I want to use.

My pick of the week today is a little different. It’s not the newest product, or even a product at all. I’m going on a weekend crop retreat with my “peeps” and realized that this is a perfect ‘Pick of the Week’! If you have never done this, I HIGHLY recommend it.  Our group actually gets together about every 3 months. We’ve been doing this for so long that we have it down to a science. We don’t always go to the same location, but the truly important things are always the same….Jen brings the sausage dip, Karla brings the red pepper dip and her glorious bars, Ang brings her fabulous salsa and chips, Lindsey brings the pickle roll ups, and Sara brings an old family recipe….not really sure what’s in it, but it’s slushy, you drink it through a straw and it’s heavenly. Abby and I are the health conscious ones (wink, wink)–I bring the spinach dip and Abby brings the strawberry daiquiris! I think that about covers the 4 food groups. Don’t forget the movies….we have several movies that we watch at each and every crop–“27 Dresses”, “The Holiday”, and “The Proposal”, and then we mix it up with some newer releases. This weekend we will be croppin’ to “The Blind Side” and the entire season of “Glee” (it starts up again on Tuesday….WOOHOO).

Let me start off with a warning – after reading this post, you might be tempted to call Archiver’s and sign up for ScrapMania.  Although I work for Archiver’s, I’m only an occasional scrapbooker.  I don’t spend a ton of time on my projects; I like fast and easy solutions and I don’t sign-up for marathon weekend crops or scrapbooking retreats.  I should be the last one trying to sell anyone on signing up for a six-hour scrapbooking evening at our store.  I was never personally excited about the idea of ScrapMania; until I was dragged there by my mother and accidentally had a great time.

When I first started working at Archiver’s several years ago, I was already customer, but had never attended any classes or events at the store, including ScrapMania.  If you’re not familiar with ScrapMania, it goes on in Archiver’s workroom every Friday and Saturday night from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm.  There’s a lot more to it than that (find out more here), but you get the idea.

Several years back, my mother suggested to my sister-in-law and I that the three of us should sign up for a ScrapMania night together.  Now I am not one of those scrapbookers who signs up for weekend-long retreats.  The most consecutive time I’d ever spent scrapbooking was a couple hours at my kitchen table, so my first reaction was dread;  I couldn’t imagine spending six hours scrapbooking!  SIX HOURS?  What would I do with all that time?  I was sure I’d be bored within a couple hours or less.

I’m all about cropping the stuff you don’t need out of photos.  In with the good, out with the bad.  This is a page idea I stole from a CK magazine years and years ago.  Its simplicity keeps it trendy…I love that!  I loved the idea of focusing on a small element of the big picture.
