Cards

We recently added a new member to our household–a beagle puppy named Lucy.

The day we brought Lucy home, we walked into the kitchen to find a surprise waiting for us on the counter. My sister left a basket full of dog treats and toys for our puppy to find when we got home. While the gift itself was so thoughtful, my favorite part, hands-down, was the handmade card she tucked into the basket.

Isn’t it cute? I especially love the clever ear flap. On the back side, she wrote a sweet little note to Lucy, too. My sister is very creative, but doesn’t really scrapbook or make cards all that often. She doesn’t have boxes and boxes overflowing with supplies like some of us do. Instead, she used just a few sheets of cardstock, some stickers, and a marker and turned them into a unique, special card that I will keep forever.

This card just reinforces to me that you don’t have to spend hours or use tons of supplies to make a handmade card or gift. Just taking the time to make something–no matter how simple or elaborate–really speaks volumes and shows someone you care. My sister could have easily picked up a generic card at any store, but instead, chose to create something much more personal. Plus, her card is so much cuter than any store-bought card, at least in my eyes.

Next time you need to give a card, give a handmade one–it will be worth it, I promise!

Paging through some older idea books I had lying around, I came across this card and decided to scrap-lift it.

I like how the flower was positioned off the edge of the card. However, instead of using a flower embellishment, I stamped a flower for my card. I simply stamped each petal (any flower stamp would work!) on white cardstock using a brightly colored ink, cut the petals out, and assembled the flower on my card. Add in some letter stickers, a rub-on or stamp, a cute button, and my card is done!

I had a hard time stamping my image onto embossed card (cardstock with a raised pattern) since my image wouldn’t stamp down into the grooves.  I found a remedy for this…stamp the image on flat cardstock first, then run it through the Sizzix texture folders to create beautiful paper for cards and scrapbooks.  I was surprised that it didn’t distort the image or the detailed sentiment.  You can try out this technique at our Make & Take event, August 6th, 7th & 8th!

Humor and handmade cards don’t usually go together, but I don’t see why they shouldn’t!  I love reading through all the funny cards at Hallmark and I love making cards, so why not combine the two?!

All 3 of these cards have 3 products in common: Silhouette SD die-cut machine, cardstock and a printer.  If you don’t want to handwrite your funny sentiments, you can always run your cardstock through a printer (*Kinko’s will also print on our cardstock).  And the Silhouette is a great tool for card-makers and scrapbookers…I cut out the word bubble, the skateboard, the girl and the bridge using this tool.  You can adjust the shape or word to any size you need.  Plus, my favorite feature is that it cuts from vinyl (vinyl doesn’t require the use of a cutting mat so you can cut forever on the adhesive vinyl and not worry about using up your mats!)  Check out the book Get Real Greetings for tons of sassy ideas for your handmade cards :)

Did you know that you can find over 2,000 project ideas on Archiver’s online idea pages?  While I was browsing through them, I came across this card from several years back:

Even thought the papers are a little outdated, I like the design of this card. With a few October Afternoon papers, some kraft cardstock, a couple circle punches, and a cute Hero Arts sentiment stamp, I made a card that’s a bit more modern and fits my personal style a little better.

That’s the great thing about scrap-lifting–you don’t have to copy an idea exactly! You can take bits and pieces of the design, colors, techniques, etc. and turn them into something more “you”. Or, take an older idea and update it with current product to give it a whole new look.

Spend a few minutes looking through Archiver’s idea pages–you’re bound to find a ton of great ideas you can scrap-lift, too!

Archiver’s has its own line of stationery called Yours Truly.  One of my favorite things in our collection of cards and envelopes is our sticker seals for envelopes.  They’re great for sealing envelopes with a coordinating color, but my favorite use for them lately is POLKA DOTS!  Super easy to create a background of polka dots on a card, envelope, page, tag or even on wrapping paper!  Check out this baby card that literally took me 5 minutes…

Oh what fun it was to peruse old photos of Great Grandpa in a quest for the perfect addition to this year’s Father’s Day card. I love including photos on cards as a way to remember the days of old. When working with original photos, don’t forget to make archival safe copies. Archiver’s has a convenient archival color copier to easily copy original photos and size them perfectly to fit your cards (and scrapbook pages too!).

The vintage vibe of 7gypsies paper offered the perfect backdrop for this carefree photo. I chose my three favorite scrapbook tools to work with, making it easy to construct the card: We R Memory Keepers Corner Chompers for sophisticated deco corners, my Tonic distress tool to add texture, and my trusty border punch and circle punches that always come through when I need them!  And, when plain circles are just…well…too plain, use a dotted stamp with VersaMark to add a subtle background. I finished the card with brown twine in mini knots to accentuate the downright adorable photo of Great Grandpa.

Even though Father’s Day is this Sunday, there’s still plenty of time to make a card Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa will love!

Modern Mom

“The ending of an era and the turning of a page…” sings country star Tim McGraw. No doubt we’ve all been there, or will be at some time, to the stage in our life where our closest friends and family are welcoming children of their own. ‘Tis the story of my life as my dearest friends are becoming moms and dads. And with expected arrivals, comes the need for baby shower cards, cards for my hospital visits and of course “welcome home baby” cards. My friends have come to know that I make every card by hand just for them, so needless to say, I’m quickly gaining experience in the baby card category.

My inspiration for this card came from my dear friend Stacey who is one modern mom  of her one-week old daughter Harper Elle. She’s a classy fashionista, beautiful inside and out, and is highly creative herself. (Just look at her artsy engagement photo and her chic mom and baby photos!). I sat down to create a card for Harper and knew I had to think differently about my color choice. Baby cards don’t need to feature the traditional colors of blue for boys and pink for girls. Instead, take a fresh approach and choose colors that are different and even sophisticated! Here I chose a more modern design combining shades of light blue and coral and combined with the ever-so-versatile BasicGrey Basics paper (love this!) and my new favorite card component – Core’dinations cardstock! Using a Making Memories sanding block, I roughed up the light grey cardstock to add a soft texture as the background for my die-cut letters. In my world, a baby card is not complete without a wrap of delicate tool further embellished with miniature clear gemstones for a hint of sparkle.  Once you find card components you like, it’s easy to transfer them to create multiple cards such as the second baby boy example.

Handmade baby cards in general become cherished mementos for a baby’s memory box, but taking it a step further to customize to the style of the family can give that extra ounce of your love!
