They say “it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” Because when it comes to our scrapbooks, that is where the visual representation of our memories and written stories unfold. But, I’d also venture to say that “what’s on the outside” is pretty important too.

I trust We R Memory Keepers 8 1/2″ x 11″ leather three-ring binders for keeping my projects safe and sound, and stylish too! The wide color pallete from red to navy, black, yellow, green, and more allows you to easily coordinate your album to your liking. For example, I selected the cheery red color to store my idea pages. When my monthly magazines hit the mailbox, I carefully tear out the ideas I’d like to “scrap-lift” and organize in We R Memory Keeper’s sturdy page protectors. I love turning the pages of this gallery of ideas and can always easily find what I need – talk about a convenient book! Did I mention that it holds a lot of pages too?

My collection of binders also includes a black “guy book” as my husband calls it. In order to commemorate his accomplishments in competing in triathlons, I created an album that showcased his race photos and mementos, in a more classic fashion with simple matting and minimal embellishments. Guys like scrapbooks too, and this album answered the call.

Next time you’re looking for a home for your project give these binders a try! You’ll gain flexibility by choosing from an assortment of page protector options (hybrid scrapbooking at its finest!), a professional appearance on your shelf or coffee table, and a piece that is as beautiful on the inside as it is out.

Across the globe, on a classroom floor in Perth, Australia at Curtain University is where it happened. Led by an Aboriginal woman, my month-long course in Aboriginal Studies was coming to a close as 30 students and our fearless professor sat cross-legged on the floor. We were asked to each share who we are and where we came from. The soft movement in the room after that question was announced set-off vibes of discomfort and uneasiness so much you could feel it. Why? Many honestly do not know. In a class of highly educated individuals, what appears to be the most basic question was seemingly the most difficult. Suddenly, it was my turn and I replied with the bit of information I knew: “I’m, Danish, French, part German and Norwegian.”

Yes, that was the moment. I’ve spoken to my grandparents many times about their family, my ancestors, their adventures walking miles to school, how they met, and more. My aunt and others have rigored over locating old family documents, searching historical databases and online to understand our genealogy, But, I, like many, are guilty of not making the time. My worst fear became reality when my grandpa passed away six years ago. With his passing are his stories, his memories, and his identification of who we are and where we came from.

Fortunately, I had that “ah ha” moment in Australia. The first thing I did upon arriving home was visit my grandparents and start the dialogue. During this visit, I brought a journal of questions – questions that someday I’ll re-read the answers to and feel blessed to know. I so nicely gave my grandparents gentle reminders to continue filling out the book. It became an enriching experience for them to recount their memories, and for me, it is now a window into my grandpa’s memory with the beautiful words written in his own handwriting.

I learned of his service to not one or two, but five branches of the military, his most embarrassing moments, who was his role model was, where my great grandparents were born and so much more. As I write this, I stumble upon a message he wrote to me in the book.

“I think each person is unique and no one can take another’s place. There will never be another you! Your brown eyes remind me of your mom. Because of you, we will live forever.”

The written words are something you can never get back. Challenge yourself to make the time to initiate the dialogue and begin capturing the memories on paper. To get started, think about the questions you often wonder – from silly to serious. Purchase an archival safe album, write or print your questions in the album, and give to your loved ones with an archival-safe pen for journaling their answers. You can go a step further by adding simple matted photos and embellishments to enhance the look of your special keepsake. Whichever method you choose, the important takeaway is the appreciation that you are doing something to begin the dialogue and begin to safely capture these memories. Speaking from experience, I know you won’t regret it.

The time is now!

It’s the age old question – what do you get for the person who has it all?! This week, I found the perfect solution for the crafter who “has it all!”

In search of the perfect gift for my best friend, I came across these colorful Romanoff mini storage boxes that come in cheery colors like strawberry, grape and lime. They have the automatic cute factor going for them, and while they’re ultra affordable at $1.99, they also make the PERFECT home for a set of mini cards! In no time at all, I was able to personalize the box top and create a set of coordinating mini cards. She’ll now have custom greetings to share with her friends and family and can continue to use the box for safe keeping. The combination is a gift any crafter can appreciate!

Like mini cards as much as I do? Be sure to grab a seat in the Marvelous Minis Card Workshop that starts this weekend! There’s even an entire front table display of items dedicated to making mini cards – get creative today in a “mini” way!

Circle Crazy!

Ask my fellow scrappers and they’ll tell you I ADORE using circles on my layouts and cards! While the most basic of shapes, circles bring movement and natural interest to a design. I continue to invest in a variety of tools to create circles because I know they’ll never go out of style. In addition to my variety of circle punches, I recently added the new Circle Scissor Pro to my collection and WOW! I count on flawless circles every time without the hassle of wasting paper and cutting again and again until its right.

To commemorate my niece’s 2nd birthday, I combined punched circles, circles cut with the Circle Scissor Pro, circle gemstones, and even my i-top Brad Maker that allowed me to create custom brads to match my layout perfectly. Mix and match circles of all sizes for a fun, flirty layout!

Come to Archiver’s this weekend and try the newest tools to hit our shelves and ask for a demo of the Circle Scissor Pro too!

Today certainly feels like Monday after celebrating an enjoyable holiday weekend! If you’re looking for a festive way to thank the hosts of a backyard BBQ or other holiday gathering, consider this red, white and blue inspired thank you card! Over the weekend, we honored the American flag and wouldn’t you know, paper-crafted flags are all the rage right now too! Create your flag base using patterned paper or cardstock, layer with sparkly glitter sticker letters, and adhere to your card with Pop Dots and natural twine. From there, grab your favorite coordinating scraps and creatively layer for a “piecy” effect. To avoid a really linear look, create small tears in one of the layers and rub lightly with chalk ink. Then, grab your favorite border punch (mine is Threading Water by Fiskars) to complete the layered chain. To finish, add a touch of bling with small gold metals. While the card takes minutes to make, you’ll make a lasting impression on your hosts with your festive token of appreciation!

My husband and I recently took an amazing trip to the Tour of California with some of our best friends. We made incredible memories so when we got home, our first priority was setting up a date to review and trade pictures, laugh and recount the memories.

Sharing pictures is a very special part of life, so keeping them safe is of utmost importance. As a crafter, it’s impossible to just hand over a stack of photos without doing something creative with them. I printed doubles of our photos and rather than turning them over in a plain envelope, I utilized the clear, sturdy (and archival-safe of course) Iris photo cases! The top is flat making it perfect to add a splash of creativity, which in this case, was customized with the initial of the recipient. Simply use your scraps and items you have on hand – that’s all it takes!

Holding up to 100 4” x 6” photos, these Iris cases are great for long-term storage, or for keeping photos for upcoming projects safe until you’re prepared to create! And no worries if you become addicted to using these cases like me – there is a larger organizer to keep multiple cases stored neatly together, a fabulously organized solution!

Tired of the traditional baby shower games and looking to do something meaningful for that special mom-to-be in your life? This is the perfect activity for you! Spice up a baby shower by creating a memory album for baby’s first memories. This activity allows guests to interact and socialize, get creative and work together to create a gift mom and baby will cherish for years to come!

Here’s how!

As the host, pick-up these basic supplies:

  • Adhesive
  • Paper trimmer
  • Scissors
  • Chalk ink (I love Chestnut Roan!)
  • 8″ x 8″ album
  • Coordinating paper and embellishments (I used the ADORABLE October Afternoon “Ducks in a Row” collection)
  • Coordinating 8 1/2″ x 11 cardstock
  • Ribbon
  • Basic punches (such as circles or border punches)

Once you’ve selected the creative supplies, spread out the goodies and encourage each guest to create a two-page layout allowing room for mom to add photos later. Consider pulling examples from magazines or even creating a few samples of your own to lead the way.  The result will be a coordinating completed album mom can use immediately!

This idea is perfect for more than just baby showers! By simply changing the type of paper and embellishments, this activity also suites a child’s birthday party, Girl Scout troop, bridal shower and more. If additional copies are needed, take completed pages to Archiver’s where you can easily make archival-safe copies on demand using the color copier.

What a cheerful creation?!

Oh what fun it was to peruse old photos of Great Grandpa in a quest for the perfect addition to this year’s Father’s Day card. I love including photos on cards as a way to remember the days of old. When working with original photos, don’t forget to make archival safe copies. Archiver’s has a convenient archival color copier to easily copy original photos and size them perfectly to fit your cards (and scrapbook pages too!).

The vintage vibe of 7gypsies paper offered the perfect backdrop for this carefree photo. I chose my three favorite scrapbook tools to work with, making it easy to construct the card: We R Memory Keepers Corner Chompers for sophisticated deco corners, my Tonic distress tool to add texture, and my trusty border punch and circle punches that always come through when I need them!  And, when plain circles are just…well…too plain, use a dotted stamp with VersaMark to add a subtle background. I finished the card with brown twine in mini knots to accentuate the downright adorable photo of Great Grandpa.

Even though Father’s Day is this Sunday, there’s still plenty of time to make a card Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa will love!

Modern Mom

“The ending of an era and the turning of a page…” sings country star Tim McGraw. No doubt we’ve all been there, or will be at some time, to the stage in our life where our closest friends and family are welcoming children of their own. ‘Tis the story of my life as my dearest friends are becoming moms and dads. And with expected arrivals, comes the need for baby shower cards, cards for my hospital visits and of course “welcome home baby” cards. My friends have come to know that I make every card by hand just for them, so needless to say, I’m quickly gaining experience in the baby card category.

My inspiration for this card came from my dear friend Stacey who is one modern mom  of her one-week old daughter Harper Elle. She’s a classy fashionista, beautiful inside and out, and is highly creative herself. (Just look at her artsy engagement photo and her chic mom and baby photos!). I sat down to create a card for Harper and knew I had to think differently about my color choice. Baby cards don’t need to feature the traditional colors of blue for boys and pink for girls. Instead, take a fresh approach and choose colors that are different and even sophisticated! Here I chose a more modern design combining shades of light blue and coral and combined with the ever-so-versatile BasicGrey Basics paper (love this!) and my new favorite card component – Core’dinations cardstock! Using a Making Memories sanding block, I roughed up the light grey cardstock to add a soft texture as the background for my die-cut letters. In my world, a baby card is not complete without a wrap of delicate tool further embellished with miniature clear gemstones for a hint of sparkle.  Once you find card components you like, it’s easy to transfer them to create multiple cards such as the second baby boy example.

Handmade baby cards in general become cherished mementos for a baby’s memory box, but taking it a step further to customize to the style of the family can give that extra ounce of your love!
