Well, it’s that time of year again. Time to clean out the garage, do some painting, rent some tables and chairs and of course the “slushy machine” and hope for a nice warm Minnesota June! I’m pretty much a pro at this by now…
I’m referring to “Open House” of course. Graduation is right around the corner. I’ve been through this twice before so I kind of have it down to a science.
I’m not sure if it’s the same in different parts of the country, but here in Minnesota, it’s a tradition to have a party honoring your graduate. This usually takes place at your home, generally outside weather permitting. It involves family and friends and LOTS of food. In my experience it’s also a time to show off your graduate by means of a display table. This usually includes photo boards, trophies, memorabilia and most importantly, scrapbooks!
Graduation is actually the reason I got into scrap booking…..also how I discovered Archiver’s! About two months before my oldest sons’ graduation (2003), I decided I should make a scrapbook documenting his life. Even though I had never done anything like this before, I was really excited to get started. I even had a plan. I was going to start with his baby pictures (he was the first born, so I have a million photos) move on to his school years, lets not forget all the sports, marching bands, friends, girlfriends, homecoming, prom, bikes, cars, vacations, birthdays, holidays, pets and on and on and on…..not to exclude graduation photos.
I had the whole scenario worked out in my head……I would have at least two if not three completed scrapbooks to display on MY son’s table! It would be AWESOME!
OK…back to reality. By the time the open house rolled around, I had 8 pages done.
That’s right….8… I know what you are thinking… but I have to tell you, I was so pleased and proud of those 8 pages! I received tons of compliments from those who attended and it made me realize how important scrap booking really is. Preserving pieces of my family. It made such an impact that I have been scrap booking ever since.
Two years later, my second son graduated. By this time I was getting pretty good at it (and I didn’t wait until the last minute) and he had many more pages in his scrapbooks.
Now, I guess you could say I’m a veteran scrapbooker and a master grad party coordinator! As you can probably imagine, my youngest doesn’t have any shortage of scrapbook pages. I can hardly wait for the chance to share them with friends and family. I truly think that scrap booking has been one of the single most important accomplishments of my life. I am documenting and preserving my family’s history….and having a blast along the way. I truly believe that if everyone could experience the satisfaction we scrappers feel when we finish a layout of our family….EVERYONE would scrapbook!
Although this particular graduation is somewhat bittersweet for me, I am still looking forward to the best open house yet!
….and a lifetime of scrapping…

I’m on #3 son graduating this year, and #1 graduating from college, so I’m getting to be a pro too!
The best thing I did, as far as scrapbooks, rather than try to get every photo in my stash done, I got a 20 page scrapbook. I did one page for each year of their lives…an intro page with a baby and current photo, and the last page is a cap and gown photo. Its so much more manageable! I also do soccer books…I have the growing up book about 1/2 done and soccer not started. I also need to finish #1′s book of college photos. I still have 6 weeks, haha…

I do not have old enough children to graduate but when i hear all the last minute horror stories I am so happy I started scrapping them from birth on (well actually they all had their 1st book waiting for photos when the were born). I did how ever help my mother prepair for my baby brothers high school graduation a couple of years ago (2007). It was a lot of work, but it was so fun to watch his pals looking at all the old pics of him and the family seeing all that he had been up to in high school!! I can’t wait to do the big displays like you did in your pics!!! Hope this last open house is special!!!!

Another MN mom with a son graduating! (#4 of 5 for us) I feel like I have so much left to do even though I’ve worked for years on this day ~ I know it will all be good and the day will go perfectly. Thanks for inspiration!

Does anyone have any creative ideas for centerpieces?
-
Hi Ann,
Because our grad parties are outside, I used potted flowers as centerpieces. I painted the pots in the school colors and planted bright colored flowers in them. I then made cute little tags with my son’s name on them and attached them to thin sticks to push down into the dirt. I then hung little tiny drums on them. (he was a drummer) After the grad party, I planted the flowers in my garden!

Thanks Molly!

Thanks from me to – the flower pots are a great idea. I have searched and searched for a site with tips and ideas of things to make for sports banquet center pieces and party favors or graduation ideas like the one you just gave and I’m not finding much out there.

I LOVE the flower pot idea. I only wish I had seen this post last year before my daughter’s grad party. One thing I would add is that if you have friends/family who are big helpers at the party like I did (a couple of my best friends helped replenish food and decorate so I could mingle), I would suggest having an extra couple of of pots to give them as Thank You gifts. You could even have the grad write a note of thanks and present to them at the end of the open house.
Thanks for the great ideas, I have 3 years til the second grad party.

Oh and have the grad make one or two tri fold poster boards with their favorite pics. My daughter is not a scrapbooker, but when given a stack of bright paper and a stack of photos of her and her friends throughout the years, she did a fantastic job of adhering to the poster boards and felt like she helped out. Of course, she just received the duplicate photos of ones I already either scrapped or am planning to but still…it was fun to see her creativity come out and she had a good friend help her too.

For my daughter who is involved in several sports I bought clay pots and painted them school colors and then cut flowers mega phones, volleyballs, and things for track out on the cricut along with a senior picture, glued them to painted wooden sticks and put them in the pots for centerpieces on the table. To hold them in the pots I used the green foam you use for flower arranging. Check the cricut website they have some good ideas on there.

Kath: I would love to see your ideas on the scrapbook that you made for your son. This is exactly what I’m wanting to do for my daughter and just need some ideas to get started with all the photos I have.
